Want to learn more about the Mansfield AD1 project? Explore answers to common questions about how Vanguard Renewables transforms food waste into renewable energy and supports local communities.
Yes, our operations are safe for our local communities. We have operated anaerobic digesters safely for more than a decade, and the safety of people, communities, and the environment is our highest priority. Our projects comply with all applicable local, state, and federal safety standards to protect the environment and communities where we operate.
We only accept unsellable food and beverage waste as feedstock, similar to what you may find in your refrigerator or order from a restaurant, and make sure that the waste we put into the digester is safe to use.
Anaerobic digestion is a natural process that reduces greenhouse gases and odors. The nutrient-rich digestate produced can be used as a natural fertilizer, reducing operating costs and a reliance on chemical fertilizers.
We design our digesters with multiple safeguards to protect the environment and prevent incidents and spills, including setbacks from waterways, secondary containment systems, stormwater controls, routine inspections, and state-approved spill-prevention and response plans. All our projects include routine inspections, monitoring requirements, and enforcement mechanisms to enhance safety.
With global conflicts disrupting energy markets and contributing to higher fuel and electricity costs, investing in domestic infrastructure like this strengthens American energy independence and provides more stable, locally produced energy.
Anaerobic digestion repurposes food and beverage waste by transforming it into renewable natural gas and fertilizer. Every year, about 40% of the food produced in the U.S. is wasted. In Central Ohio, 1 million pounds of food is sent to the landfill every day. Instead of sending it to landfills, we can repurpose it through anaerobic digestion — turning unsellable food into renewable natural gas and fertilizer that feeds back into our communities and farms.
Our anaerobic digesters are clean, enclosed systems that recycle pre-consumer food and beverage waste into renewable energy, not facilities for disposal or storage. We process only natural food and beverage waste, including the types of food products used in everyday kitchens or served in restaurants. This may include dairy products that are past their sell-by dates, beer or soda that’s off-spec or expired, or produce that’s no longer fresh enough to sell. Our digesters never accept hazardous, toxic, human, pharmaceutical, or industrial waste, biosolids, or sewage sludge.
Vanguard Renewables is committed to protecting water resources and being a responsible steward of the environment. Any operator building an anaerobic digester in Ohio must obtain permits from the Division of Surface Water (DSW) and Division of Air Pollution Control (DAPC) under Ohio EPA regulations, which are reviewed every five years and include multiple opportunities for public input.

No, the digester will not create bad odors for the community. Food and beverage waste entering our facilities is tightly managed, arrives sealed, and is never stockpiled on-site. Our anaerobic digesters are fully enclosed systems, which prevent odors from escaping during processing. Inside the digester, the oxygen-free environment naturally breaks down odor-causing compounds, significantly reducing odors. The resulting digestate is stored in state-of-the-art, covered storage tanks and used as a natural fertilizer. It typically has an earthy scent, similar to topsoil.
Vanguard Renewables relies on private investment and does not use taxpayer dollars or public funding to construct the project. In fact, anaerobic digesters add a new source of tax revenue that can help fund public services across the county.
The truck traffic associated with our projects is minimal and does not significantly affect overall traffic volume in the area. Anaerobic digesters themselves are no louder than a laundromat and can’t usually be heard by project neighbors. All vehicles will arrive sealed or covered to control dust and odor.
Vanguard Renewables works closely with local officials to manage truck routes and minimize traffic. We assess local roads and infrastructure and are responsible for upgrading them, if needed. All trucks will arrive during daylight hours, and a majority of the feedstock is expected to come from the greater Columbus region, avoiding the West Mansfield area. Routes may vary depending on sourcing, so occasional truck traffic through the community is possible, but not expected to be routine.

Vanguard Renewables develops and operates anaerobic digestion facilities that turn excess food and beverage waste into energy. Since 2014, the company has worked to keep organic waste out of landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and produce energy right here at home. These projects support local farms, strengthen local economies, and expand access to U.S.-produced energy.
